Hi my name is Debra but feel free to call me Deb – Welcome to “Naturally Debra”. My personal Instagram account @naturalkindagal expresses some of the things that inspire me pretty accurately, I think.
I’m a natural, down to earth kinda gal, who loves flowers, nature, wildlife, beautiful skies, healthy food and animals, all animals, but especially my cat and dog.
I’m also one of those pretty friendly, talk to people in grocery store lines and store checkers, kinda persons – sometimes to the embarrassment of my kids when they were teenagers!
Right now I’m living in beautiful Sonoma County in Northern California with my husband and 2 fur babies – Trapper the male black cat and Chanel, (yes, like the brand), the female white Eskie, aka American Eskimo Dog.
I’m a mom of 4 grown up kids who are off doing their own thing these days. I also have a sweet, 7 year old, grandson named Nathan.
A Little Background About Me
I became a vegetarian when I was in my early twenties in the 70’s. Those were exciting times for me and my husband. It really caused us to become who we are now. It truly changed our lives and our outlook on almost everything, which was a welcome change from the status quo of the times.
To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Becoming vegetarians back in that day certainly wasn’t very mainstream like it is now. But there was definitely a movement and we were part of it.
We were drinking fresh pressed juices, doing cleanses and shopping for “natural foods” in co-ops and produce markets in Portland, Oregon. Back then it was more of a grass roots type thing – not so trendy and all shiny and polished like the organic food markets are now.
So here I am, after many moons, still eating this way. I’m definitely not perfect at always eating the best, but it’s in me now to always consider my choices and be very aware of what I’m eating.
Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes
No fancy recipes here, but simple, real, whole natural foods – mostly healthy, but sometimes not…always vegetarian.
Striving to Age Gracefully
As you can tell by some of the things I told you above, I’ve been around in the healthy eating realm for a while. It’s nice to see people increasingly wanting to take better care of their health these days.
I have to tell you that I’m very thankful and “proud” to be able to tell people that I don’t take any medications, and never have. As I’m sure you know, most people my age do.
Someone who really inspires me and a person I really respect and look up to is Mimi Kirk. If you don’t know who she is, just google her. At almost 79 years old she is still a beautiful, vibrant, energetic and inspiring lady because of the lifestyle she’s chosen.
Even at my age, or should I say, especially at my age, it’s nice to have someone older than me who can be such a good example of health, positive outlook and be so young at heart.
Let’s Be Friends
My photography skills aren’t the best, but I’m learning. I can’t be anyone other than who I am and I’m not gonna let that stop me. So I think the old saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” isn’t totally applicable here.
It just seems to take a little longer and sometimes I need to get a little help from my awesome Instagram friends who are far more experienced than I am! Margaret, Traci, Consuelo, Noémie, Maya, Dee, Deborah, Bianca, to name a few – actually I think that’s most of them. They are all such sweethearts and have all helped me with my questions. The healthy eating Instagram community is so kind and supportive and I’m so thankful to be part of it.
How we think is how we are. It’s all in our mindset, right? So, on that note I’ll end by saying, let’s be friends – years don’t really matter – it’s the person we are that matters.
PS I completed a 6 month Plant-Based Certification course through Rouxbe Cooking School last year – just sayin… 🙂
